Misty mountains.
A wonderfully slow pace.
3,143m peaks, terraced valleys, Hmong villages. Northern Vietnam at its most dramatic.
Sapa sits at 1,500 metres in the Hoang Lien Son range near the Chinese border. The terraced rice paddies carved into the mountainside over centuries are among the most visually striking things you'll see anywhere in Southeast Asia. Most people say it was the highlight of their entire Vietnam trip — but only if they gave it enough time.

Rice Terrace Season
The terraced rice paddies carved into the mountainside over centuries are among the most visually striking things you'll see in Southeast Asia. The colour changes through the year — golden in harvest season, vivid green in summer — and the light here is unlike anywhere else.
- Golden terraces: September – November
- Green terraces: May – August
- Best photography: early morning mist
- Muong Hoa Valley is the classic viewpoint
- Drone photography can be arranged
Two nights minimum. Three is better. Most people say Sapa was the highlight of their Vietnam trip — but only because they stayed long enough.
Overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, then 45 minutes to Sapa. Or private car all the way — comfortable and flexible. We arrange both.
September–November for golden rice terraces. March–May for spring blossoms. Avoid January–February: cold, foggy, and busy with Tet traffic.
